Ice Cream, Conversation, and Civic Participation in Guthrie

Ice cream and political conversation shared a space on Friday as the Todd County Democratic Party hosted “Ice Cream for Democracy!” at the Guthrie Senior Citizens Center.

Party Chair Laura Brock welcomed attendees to the open to the public gathering, which featured ice cream from Guthrie's own Happy Ice Cream & Snacks, local speakers, a recorded message from U.S. Senate candidate Charles Booker, and an in-person appearance by John “Drew” Williams, the Democratic candidate for Kentucky's 1st Congressional District.

Laura thanked attendees and the committee members who helped organize the event before introducing Omar Figueroa, a Todd County graduate now attending Western Kentucky University.

A Younger Generation's Perspective

Omar identified himself as a college student studying middle-school education. He acknowledged that he was nervous to speak. He talked about wanting to represent younger people, including those who are not yet old enough to vote, and encouraged eligible voters to participate in the election.

He connected voting with the future of families and younger generations, sharing his own plans to vote and his hope that both he and his parents could feel comfortable and secure in their community.

Laura also told attendees that Ava Reed, who was unable to attend, and another student were working to establish a Todd County Democrats chapter for students at Todd County Central High School. The proposed chapter would provide another opportunity for students to become involved in civic and political life.

Encouraging People to Stay Involved

Greg Russell, a member of the Todd County Democratic Party's executive committee, spoke about the challenges Democrats had faced and the importance of voter participation. He argued that political decisions affect people across different backgrounds, including those dealing with medical expenses or trying to afford a home.

“It's not just one man. It's all of us,” Greg said.

Greg also praised Drew, describing him as dedicated and emphasizing that he shows up when it is time to do the work. He encouraged attendees to remain instead of becoming discouraged by the political climate.

Charles Booker, who was unable to attend in person, sent a video message to the gathering. In the recording, he apologized for his absence, expressed support for those gathered, and encouraged them to continue their efforts during the final stretch of the campaign.

Memories of a Campaign Trail

Bruce Voth, also a member of the Todd County Democratic Party's executive committee, recalled meeting Drew at a small gathering at Traveler's Lantern Market & Cafe in Trenton during the summer of 2025.

Bruce said the meeting stood out because Drew sat down with the local residents and chatted with them rather than just delivering a prepared campaign speech. Bruce described subsequent meetings and discussions about issues affecting Todd County, presenting those conversations as part of his reason for supporting the candidate.

Drew spoke about his background in construction and his experience building boat docks on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, work he has done since he was 14, according to his campaign biography. He also explained his platform and the reasons he decided to run for Congress.

Following his remarks, Drew opened the floor to questions from attendees. The question-and-answer session covered several issues that were important to attendees including the cost of living, challenges facing small businesses and farmers, government contracts, immigration enforcement and reform, and how legislation is handled in Congress.

The exchange gave attendees an opportunity to raise concerns they have and hear how Drew responded directly.

A Community Gathering

The event brought together political speakers and local residents for an evening that combined refreshments with discussion about elections, representation, and public issues. Attendees had an opportunity to hear from speakers, ask questions of a congressional candidate, and consider ways to participate in civic life.
